  19.   If you don't subscribe or normally look for Computer Graphics World at 
  20. your local bookstore, I would recommend the April issue.  There is a 
  21. review of the three major 3D packages for WinNT: Lightwave 4.0, SoftImage 
  22. NT, and 3D Studio Max.  CGW tends to lean towards the very expensive 
  23. packages and systems and doesn't really stray from that tendency but does 
  24. give LW some good comments, as well as a couple of stinging jabs, with 
  25. respect to 3D Studio. However, it is interesting that the article describes 
  26. what LW actually has in 4.0 versus what is supposed to happen with 3D 
  27. Studio Max. Of course, one should notice that Autodesk is a major 
  28. advertiser in CGW.
  29.   There is a bunch of other stuff and a special magazine supplement is 
  30. included called "digital magic". There are several interesting articles 
  31. in it, including a pretty comprehensive review of the existing digital 
  32. camcorders on the market now.
  33.   Also, in this article, is a very clear statement for the REAL reason 
  34. for the lack of external digital recording in these systems, despite one 
  35. person's contention that it is a Japanese plot to empty trusting 
  36. Americans' pockets. 
  37.   From the digital magic article, Digital Video Camcorders: "because of 
  38. yet-to-be-resolved copyright issues, digital video camcorders do not have 
  39. video inputs, meaning you can't record any previously recorded video with 
  40. one of these devices. This and other issues are currently being 
  41. negotiated by the Motion Picture Association of America and the 1394 
  42. Trade Association, and industry insiders predict an agreement will be 
  43. reached by this summer."
